Find out more »We welcome back the Lansdown Lecture series where we invite PhD and post-doctoral students to present their work. This gives us the opportunity to see what is happening at the ‘cutting edge’ of archaeology. Our next lecture will delivered by Chris Standish who is working on the provenance of Irish gold and what this tells us about Irish society at that time. On the 21st and 22nd of March we have re-scheduled the Dartmoor Long Barrow walk that was deferred from last year due to excessive bracken growth. Although potentially colder, at least we should be able to see the monuments!

By Dr Jacqueline Cahill Wilson, who is Principal Investigator for the LIARI (Late Iron Age and Roman Ireland) Project, which is researching the extent of Ireland’s relationship with Rome. Leaving Ireland in 1989, Dr Wilson worked in Higher Education funding and later graduated at the University of Bristol where she is now a Research Fellow after completing her doctorate there in 2010. Situated just below the tide line on Guernsey’s west coast is a curious stone feature, first noticed by a local man in 1996. A photo appeared in a new book a few years later which was when we followed it up and surveyed the site. An evaluation report was subsequently submitted by us to the Guernsey States archaeologist with a recommendation to do further work. This autumn join us for a classic Club trip to the Dutch north! As with last year's trip to Brittany we'll be taking our own minibus and travelling overnight on the very comfortable Harwich - Hook of Holland ferry and heading north to the provinces of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe, where we'll see some stupendous sights, both historic and archaeological, through the ages.
