The Rhossili Down Project Moves On
As part of the fieldwork, members of the Clifton
Antiquarian Club will be undertaking a series of
environmental sampling strategies, mainly around
the eastern side of the Down where there are
possibly deep peat deposits. These deposits will
be analysed for their pollen content and thus
give an insight to what the landscape may have
looked like in prehistory. If the cores samples
are exceptionally good, it is hoped that several
radiocarbon dates can be made in order to tie
down the chronology of the site. As part of this
phase of the project we are hoping to undertake a
reconnoitre of the landscape and will be
accompanied by an environmental expert, Dr
Rebecca Rosseff. If there is potential for
environmental sampling, we hope to spend a
weekend taking soil and peat samples in 2009.
This phase of work is subject to permission and
the submission of a detailed project design to
The National Trust in Wales. Our resident
geologist Rob Elliott will also be at hand
undertaking a detailed analysis of the exposed
solid geology. For more information and an
interim report go to the Rhossili Down project
